HOME TOUR 02 Quiet Evolution This heritage home has undergone a renovation and extension, blending Art Deco features with the practicality of a modern family home.
SITCHU MAGAZINE Designing a seamless extension is the architectural equivalent of adding a new verse to a song without changing its rhythm. For architecture and interior design practice Fowler and Ward, the challenge was even greater with this three-bedroom Yarraville home, an original Art Deco build. Centred on the idea that the extension should appear as though it had always existed, the client’s brief introduced an additional layer of complexity. Director Jessie Fowler shares, “Many architects, like us, are reluctant to ‘re-create’ heritage architecture. We often design extensions that are sympathetic to the heritage home but remain differentiated from the old.” The challenge lay in designing an extension that felt integrated, but that did not fall into “faux-heritage territory”. Beginning with the bones of the home was key. Fowler explains that the gable form of the existing house provided a strong starting point due to its practicality and timelessness. From here, they were able to add a “new ‘story-book’ triangular facade” that was at once dramatic, fresh and contemporary, yet still fulfilled the client’s brief that “the extension had to feel like it had always been there”. Working with the home’s existing high ceilings and well-lit front rooms ensured the “lofty, light-filled extension” felt like a natural progression, and was rounded out with a consistent materials palette of oak and neutral tones through the old and new. “A simple, timeless palette that doesn’t feel out of place in either space”, adds Fowler. One of the primary intentions of the renovation was to reconfigure the original Art Deco house to be conducive to family life. This was achieved with a considered shuffling of the original layout. By closing off the connection from the grand front lounge room to the former kitchen and dining space, the team was able to create a main bedroom, walk-in robe and ensuite without sacrificing the glory of the lounge. This had a flow-on effect through the rest of the house. “The previous main bedroom was enormous, and this was sliced up in a way that allowed us to create two kids’ bedrooms while retaining many beautiful period features such as the original steel-framed corner windows”, continues Fowler. With minimal other layout changes required, other original features like decorative plasterwork and distinctive interior glazing were also able to be maintained. Having successfully blended the old with the new in an exceptionally artful way, there is plenty to be proud of with this project. For the team, this meant responding to a problem with simplicity, a strategy they stand by. Returning to the gabled roof form of the new extension, Fowler notes it was this feature that provided a vehicle for simplicity in every way. “It’s simple to construct and drain. It is sympathetic to the neighbours and is strongly connected to the original house.” She continues, “The internal volume created by the soaring ceiling feels unexpected and energising”, all “achieved through a singular and simple form that is beautiful, pragmatic and cost-effective.” Architect: Fowler and Ward @fowlerandward Build: Ultra Builders @ultra_builders Photographer: Martina Gemmola @gemmola Words: Olivia Storrie “Many architects, like us, are reluctant to ‘re-create’ heritage architecture. Your Chance to Simplify Downsizing is often presented in practical terms: fewer rooms, lower maintenance, a more manageable footprint. But at its heart, downsizing is rarely just about space. It’s about intention, a chance to simplify, refine the way you live, and shape a home that supports the life you want now, not the one you once needed. Whether prompted by a new chapter, a desire for ease, or a shift in priorities, downsizing offers the opportunity to live more deliberately, surrounded only by what adds value, comfort, and meaning. Looking for more tips for your property, or thinking about buying or selling your home? Visit belleproperty.com/buy Reframing the Idea of “Less” Downsizing is not about loss. It’s about clarity. Letting go of excess creates room, physically and emotionally, for what matters most. Fewer rooms to manage can mean more time to enjoy them. Less maintenance can translate to greater freedom, whether that’s travel, time with family, or simply a slower pace of life. “When family dynamics change and people move into new chapters of life, the need for multiple bedrooms, large gardens or swimming pools often gives way to homes that are easier to maintain and simple to lock up and leave. We’re increasingly seeing older couples gravitate towards premium, low-rise apartments that offer quality design, proximity to transport and shopping, and the freedom that comes with less outdoor upkeep - without sacrificing lifestyle or comfort.” — Belle Property Neutral Bay Principal Mark Jackson. When viewed as a refinement rather than a reduction, downsizing becomes an act of curation: choosing quality over quantity, and purpose over habit. Designing for theWay You Live Now One of the key benefits of downsizing is the chance to realign your home with your current lifestyle. Open-plan living, generous natural light, and thoughtful storage often matter more than sheer size. Well-designed smaller homes can feel expansive, calm and deeply comfortable when every space has been considered. This is where downsizing becomes a chance to simplify daily life: fewer unused rooms, fewer things competing for attention, and a home that works efficiently around you. Editing with Intention The move to downsize often begins with reflection. What do you truly use? What do you love? What tells your story? Rather than viewing decluttering as a task, approach it as an edit. Keep pieces that carry meaning or serve a purpose, and release those that no longer fit the life you’re building. This thoughtful approach often results in spaces that feel lighter, more personal, and far more considered. Embracing a Sense of Freedom For many, downsizing unlocks a feeling of freedom. Reduced costs, simplified upkeep and a more manageable home can ease daily pressures and open the door to new possibilities. It’s a shift away from maintaining a property and towards enjoying it. This sense of freedom is often what makes downsizing so rewarding — it’s not just a practical decision, but a lifestyle one. A Home That Supports What Matters Most Downsizing, at its heart, is an opportunity to embrace intentional living. It offers a chance to simplify and to live better, to choose a home that reflects who you are today, supports the way you live, and allows space for the moments that matter most. Sometimes, living well isn’t about having more, it’s about having exactly enough. A Guide to Downsizing: 07 SITCHU MAGAZINE
08 HOME DESIGN Where Design Meets Ritual The Bathroom Trends Inspiring 2026 Image Credit: Architects: Smac Studio Photographer: Anson Smart
Looking for more home design inspiration? For styling tips, interior design trends and roundups of the hottest new furniture on the market, visit sitchu.com.au/home-design Once a purely functional space, the bathroom has become one of the most expressive rooms in the home. In 2026, design is shifting away from uniform minimalism and toward spaces that feel collected, confident and deeply considered — rich in texture, sculptural detail and personalised comfort. Whether dramatic or serene, the common thread is intention. Sculptural Everything Bathrooms in 2026 are embracing form as function. Round stone bathtubs, curved vanities, arched shower entries and oversized pendant lighting are taking centre stage, turning everyday fixtures into works of art. These spaces feel less about fitting in and more about standing alone — where a monolithic basin or freestanding tub anchors the room with quiet drama. Reflective Design Mirror finishes are stepping well beyond the standard vanity mirror. In 2026, reflective surfaces are layered throughout the bathroom — from antiqued mirror tiles and softly smoked cabinetry to chrome accessories and oversized mirrors that span entire walls. This trend isn’t just about aesthetics. In smaller bathrooms, reflective finishes amplify light and create a sense of depth, while in larger spaces they add glamour and a subtle sense of movement. Multiple mirror moments are key — each catching light differently as the day unfolds. Maximalist Personality Minimalism takes a back seat as bathrooms become an extension of personal style. Maximalist bathrooms are confident, layered and intentionally eclectic — where colour, pattern and texture work together rather than compete. Tile drenching, saturated wallpaper, richly veined stone and unexpected décor pieces all play a role. These are bathrooms that feel expressive and lived-in, shaped by taste rather than trends. There are no strict rules, only a sense of cohesion through bold, considered choices. Vintage Touch In an era of instant everything, heritage details feel increasingly luxurious. Vintage elements are being woven into modern bathrooms to add warmth, soul and a sense of history. Think claw-foot tubs paired with contemporary tiling, antique cabinetry repurposed as vanities, and tapware with aged finishes. The appeal lies in imperfection. Hand-painted tiles, ornate wallpapers and patinated metals bring a softness that new materials often lack — creating bathrooms that feel collected, not copied. Smart Spa Comforts Wellness continues to shape bathroom design, but in 2026 it’s becoming more seamless and intuitive. Smart technology is quietly embedded rather than overtly displayed — enhancing comfort without disrupting the aesthetic. Expect integrated sound systems, adaptive lighting tuned to circadian rhythms, scent diffusion through HVAC systems and precision-controlled underfloor heating. It’s less about gadgetry and more about creating an immersive, sensory experience that feels restorative and effortless. Organic Calm Biophilic and nature-inspired design remains a cornerstone for calming interiors, and that’s carrying through into the bathroom. Natural materials like timber, stone and marble are paired with fluid silhouettes and gentle curves that echo the natural world. Indoor greenery, textured surfaces and earthy palettes help create bathrooms that feel grounding and serene — spaces designed to slow the pace and offer a moment of quiet retreat. Australian-born chef Joshua Seeds has built a career defined by curiosity and connection to his surroundings. As Executive Chef, he champions both his Australian roots and the vibrant rhythm of life in the South Pacific, where local produce and island flavours shape his menus. How would you describe Fijian culinary culture to Australians — where do they overlap, and where do they differ? Fijian cuisine, to an Aussie palate, is a vibrant fusion of fresh Pacific flavours — seafood, coconut, tropical fruit, and root vegetables like taro and cassava — with rich Indian spices like curry and turmeric, and touches of Chinese influence, offering familiar elements like curries and grilled fish. Where they overlap is the love of seafood and communal dining. The lovo is an event where people come together, much like Australian BBQ culture. How does your chosen recipe reflect the spirit of Tokoriki Island? Snapper & Cassava Cakes are a crowd favourite. They use primarily locally sourced ingredients. They are a riff on a humble fish cake, but on the island work perfectly as a starter or snack with an icy Fiji Gold Lager. 5 Minutes with Joshua Seeds Executive Chef at Sheraton Resort & Spa, Tokoriki Island, Fiji Old Town Hong Kong Kitchen I have been eating here for years. The kitchen shuts well after midnight, with amazing duck and pork belly hanging in the windows and lots of cold beer. Joshua Seeds’ 3 Favourite Sydney Restaurants: 3. What does a perfect day off look like for you on Tokoriki, and what are you eating? Up early for a dive or two, then home to spend time with my wife and son. After lunch, it’s likely back to the beach for another swim. A late-night footy game rounds off the perfect day. What’s a simple island-inspired flavour combination home cooks can borrow for summer entertaining? Most definitely Kokoda—a refreshing dish similar to ceviche, with fresh local fish cured in lime or lemon juice, mixed with coconut cream, chilli, tomatoes, onions, and herbs. @oldtownhongkongcuisine 2. Porcine A beautiful French bistro cooking everything from scratch. I cannot fault the food, service and friendliness of the team there. My younger brother also works in the kitchen, which really makes this one a personal favourite. @norcino.sydney Norcino Salumeria A Roman Trattoria and Deli curing all things pork with three simple ingredients: salt, meat and time. We grow this, so this is what we use) Big pinch of salt 500ml canola oil, for frying Boil cassava until tender. Drain and let it steam for a few minutes to dry. Mash or mouli until nearly smooth, leaving some chunks for an authentic texture. While cassava is cooking, melt butter in a pan over medium-high heat. Add half the fish and cook for four minutes, turning once. The fish should be just cooked (flakes easily) but not golden. Transfer to a rack to cool. Repeat with the remaining fish. In the same pan, add garlic, chilli, and spring onion to the leftover butter. Cook for one minute until the garlic is golden. Pour over the cassava, scraping out every drop of butter. Add soft herbs and salt. Use a wooden spoon to roughly mix the cassava. Gently fold in the fish, breaking it slightly to distribute flakes evenly — don’t mash it; we want chunks. Roll the mixture into golf ball–sized portions and chill. No flour or crumbs are used, making this an ideal gluten-free option. Heat canola oil to 175°C. Shallow fry the balls until lightly coloured. Remove and place on a paper towel on a tray in a 180°C oven for 5–7 minutes, until hot in the centre. You should get 15–18 balls. Plate with bush lemon, fried mocca (Fijian spinach), and homemade mayonnaise spiked with lots of lemon and lime zest.
