What makes a house a home? The people? The memories? The choice of furniture? For a family of four living in a Mosman property called Black Diamond, they wanted to bottle up all of these intangible things and express the notion of home through tactile elements and connection to the moment. Entrusting Yasmine Ghoniem, director of esteemed architecture and design studio YSG, with the ambitious revamp that, like so many in recent years, was heavily impacted by COVID delays. “The clients wanted the home to feel like a boutique hotel where super comfy settings invite you to pause and feel more present in the moment,” Yasmine explains of the client’s brief. The concept of touch played a significant role in selecting fabrics and finishes for the family home and, as Yasmine admits, was at the forefront of every decision she made. “Special attention was placed on beautiful, tactile fabric selections that feel divine when you sit on them, like the alpaca and wool lounge in the living room and the nubby woven wool on the neighbouring swivel chair,” she says. “We added a bouclé base to the custom banquette in the master bedroom, where we designed a banquette within a curved window alcove that’s large enough for the clients to both stretch out on. It’s heaven against your skin.” Indeed, no crevice within this property wasn’t given the tactile treatment. From the island bench in the kitchen, which has custom, grapehued leather stools instead of solid timber ones so you can sit comfortably for longer, to the master suite’s wardrobes, which are clad in embossed vinyl and raffia weave wallpaper which beg fingers to run across them. Yasmine opted for a lavish yet tranquil tonal intensity, with nods to nature and hotel delights throughout Black Diamond. “The living space feels like a rich aquatic world as teal highlights float beneath the toffee ceiling, which we painted with Bishop’s Waterstone Plaster to achieve a mottled, velvety finish. There’s a dark broodiness in terms of the timber elements, plus the ceiling and floor tones, which we could get away with because of all the sunlight filtering in,” she reveals. “The pastel swirls in the large David Bradley canvas you encounter when you land on this level really sets the tone for the submerged scene. In the main bedroom, we painted the ceiling with a creamy caramel French Wash finish from Porter’s Paints, while wheat and oatmeal tones quieten the space,” she says of the palette choices. “Even the internals of the master ensuite’s joinery feature a gentle lilac hue – another detailed layer you’re more likely to see in a hotel than a home. Unifying the tonal theme outdoors, we re-lined the pool with blackened glass mosaics that shimmer with deep oyster shell lustre with hints of lilac,” she notes. The jaw-dropping views of Sydney Harbour were another unique element Yasmine wanted to hype up and make a focal point of the property. To do this, the team built a pony wall in the master bedroom to support the bed in the centre of the room, which means you face the balcony and breathtaking views when you wake up and go to sleep. They also removed the curved glass wall that divided the balcony in two, opening the view internally and externally. “Descending the stairs from the entry-level, pale timber treads switch to stained ebony, acknowledging the transition to the living area where a rich subaquatic world of teal highlights float beneath the toffee ceiling,” the stylist says. The hotel theme was taken outdoors and beyond the balcony, where the team replaced the greyed timber decking and its surrounding hard surfaces with light, crazy paving to unify the rear garden area. A fire pit and a cushioned seating alcove were also added to encourage entertaining. Clunky glass balustrades were updated with custom posts of rounded, blackened steel to enhance the harbour views and open up the space safely. Now, walking through Black Diamond there’s no question this is an enveloping and soothing home that feels like you’ve checked in for a life-long extended stay at a luxurious yet cosy hotel. AREA GUIDE Neighbourhood Cairns, considered the gateway to Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, is a city in tropical Far North Queensland. Brimming with coconut palms and curlews (a unique, long-legged bird you’ll meet when you get there), it’s the type of place to settle down if you’re craving a more leisurely lifestyle. If you like to hike, or you’d like to see your kids (and then grandkids) out riding bikes or jumping in creeks after school, then this tropical city is the place for you. Each area of Cairns has its own character and charm – and it’s one of the more multicultural cities in Australia. One-fifth of its population was born overseas. Its beauty lies within the fact that it has all the features of a city, but with the ease and movement and community feel of a village. Less stress, but still connected. An unbeatable combination, no? Things to Do The wealth of things to do in Cairns seems endless. From the breathtaking Babinda Boulders where you can splash about in the freshwater holes, to the welcoming Cairns Esplanade, lined with bars and restaurants, and morning yoga classes by the swimming lagoon. Hungry? Cairns offers a smorgasbord of rich, flavoursome delights. You’ll find everything here from bush tucker-inspired banquets and fresh, out-of-the-ocean seafood to fine dining degustation and even the casual curry. Northwest of the city, Daintree National Park spans mountainous rainforest, gorges and beaches. Off the coast, the allure of the Great Barrier Reef and Fitzroy Island beckons, with the pristine white sand and azure waters of Nudey Beach - a bucket list destination in Australia. Lifestyle Cairns is on the up and up; a veritable playground for outdoor enthusiasts and a burgeoning new mecca for foodies, thanks to its ever-growing roster of restaurants and bars. No matter where you live in Cairns, you can walk or take a short drive to a creek, rainforest track, or turquoise-hued beach. Make it a slightly longer drive or even a boat trip and you’ll wind up under a waterfall, up a mountain hike, or swimming in through a technicoloured reef. Add to that, a superb climate and a relaxed tropical lifestyle; its wealth of attributes make this Tropical North Queensland city one of Australia’s most desirable places to live, visit, and even do business. Cairns has a lifestyle and culture that is completely unique. Known as much for its diversity in nature as it is for its relaxed charm, the allure of this beautiful city seduces all types of people, promising a home akin to tropical paradise. Plus, a dash of urban sophistication and laid-back coastal luxury thrown in for good measure! – Nicholas & Renae Slatyer, Principals | Belle Property Cairns Cairns Captivating Easy-going vibes with a dash of urban chic, Cairns is the crowdpleaser that keeps on giving. 06

FOR THE FOODIES Maddie Begala has redefined the genre of ‘how-to’ recipe content. Rejecting the notion that recipe instructions have to be straightforward and boring, she injects her trademark comedy, dance moves and scene-setting to deliver recipe content that entertains via her social platform, Pinch of Maddie. She’s also been lucky enough to cook in some pretty cool spots around the world, from the remote Himalayas to her twin sister’s apartment in Hong Kong; and it’s inspired some fun experimentation and flavour combinations along the way. What are your favourite flavours to cook with in the warmer months? I lean towards fresh and vibrant flavours as this is the best time of year to show these off with the abundance of in-season fruits, particularly sweet and juicy tropical fruits like mangoes and pineapple, or tart stone fruits. These are super versatile – adding the perfect pop of sweetness to salads, blitzed into dressings, marinades or cocktails! In the thick of BBQ SZN, the vibrance of these ingredients also help to balance and compliment the smokiness of charred meats. Do you have any tips for hosting a fun outdoor dinner party with friends? • Aerogard on hand at all times. • Create the mood with cute table lanterns or fairy lights – it’s bound to get dark and you don’t want this to kill the party. • Don’t use disposable/paper plates – these instantly downgrade the vibe. Stick to the real deal. • Curate a menu of dishes that require minimal cooking or can be pre-prepared like hearty salads or sides. • Light up the BBQ for some extra theatre and aroma. • Don’t overcomplicate it – what you carry outside must be carried back in so keep it simple. 5 Minutes with Maddie Begala Dietitian and Product Developer I draw inspiration from restaurants to local markets, grocers to overseas holidays - nowhere is off limits! I love to experiment with new flavours and ingredients, and enjoy the challenge of tunnelling these into simple dishes that makes sense to my audience. Plus, native flowers last much longer than market or florist bunches. If bright colours work better with your bedroom’s palette, opt for red roses and fuchsia alyssums in a vase (we’re eyeing off the quirky Pomponette vase from Maison Balzac ($159) in clear borosilicate glass and draped it in a cloak of jewel-toned bubbles) on your bedside table. Evoke the Senses Round out your cosy bedroom update with a scented candle, like the Australian Bush candle by Fairywren ($28), which would go perfectly with a native flower arrangement and a gorgeous coffee table book adorned on your bedside table.
