While warm neutrals will always have their place, punchy hues and statement pieces are taking centre stage, bringing personality and energy into our spaces. That said, there’s a big difference between choosing a bright cushion and committing to a cobalt blue armchair or a pastel pink dining table. So, how do you embrace bold design without adding to unnecessary consumption? We spoke to Ryan McCarthy, interior design lead at IconByDesign, to find out how to be adventurous with interiors while staying mindful of sustainability. “Incorporating bold hues allows you to instantly inject personality, interest and depth into a space,” explains Ryan. After all, interior design is all about self-expression, and bold choices make your home feel uniquely yours. But going big doesn’t have to mean being wasteful. The key to balancing brave design with sustainability is being intentional about your choices, especially when it comes to materials. Ryan suggests selecting pieces from environmentally conscious brands while choosing durable, natural materials like solid oak. Being aware of where your furniture picks are sourced is a good starting point. “Consider recycled fabrics, such as our Olivia Solid Oak Dining Chair in Claret, to add a bold statement while also remaining sustainable,” Ryan recommends. When bringing punchy pieces into your home, it’s smart to think long-term. While trends come and go, the best interiors evolve with your style. That’s why it’s worth taking it slow and choosing items that have both impact and versatility. “Start with one piece at a time, and gradually expand your collection. Be mindful of what you’re selecting and choose pieces with intention and versatility,” Ryan says. For a low-touch start, you could opt for a brightly-hued throw styled over a warm-coloured sofa to add a pop of colour. Once you’re comfortable, start incorporating statement dining chairs and gradually build up to larger, highticket items like a modular sofa or an oversized armchair. By curating your home one piece at a time, you’re reducing waste and creating a space filled with items that tell a story and hold personal value. “I would also select products with a timeless and thoughtful design, pieces that are well-crafted like the Mysa Armchair by IconByDesign, won’t feel outdated in a few years and will stand the test of time,” Ryan notes. The takeaway? Go big with colour but stay timeless in design. That’s the happy medium for creating a striking, personality-filled home while keeping sustainability at the heart of your style.
