SITCHU MAGAZINE Nestled in the charming suburb of Sandringham, Melbourne, Elonera House is the perfect balance of Edwardian charm and modern family living. Designed by Mardi Doherty of Studio Doherty, the four-bedroom home caters to the needs of a family of five while exuding style and sophistication. The project began in 2019 but took four years to complete due to a pandemic pause, resulting in a home that feels timeless, functional, and beautifully connected to nature. The family’s vision for their home was simple yet powerful: they wanted a space that encouraged connection, comfort, and spontaneity. “They wanted a home that felt open and inviting, where family time could happen naturally and hosting friends felt effortless,” Mardi explains. It’s a vision that shaped every design decision, from the layout to the material choices. Rather than extending the home significantly, Mardi and her team focused on reworking the existing structure to suit modern family life. A subtle extension was added to the east side of the house to accommodate a laundry, walk-in pantry, and powder room. These clever additions ensured the home could better serve the family’s needs while preserving its original Edwardian charm. “We didn’t want to change the home too drastically,” Mardi says. “Instead, we enhanced its flow and functionality.” A strong emphasis was placed on connecting the home to the garden. Expansive windows and wide openings flood the living areas with natural light and offer views of the lush garden outside. The back living space, with its raised windows, feels open and airy, creating a strong connection between inside and out. “The relationship with nature was essential for the clients,” Mardi notes. “We made sure the design embraced the garden.” The colour palette at Elonera House is a masterclass in soft, earthy tones — smoky blues, muted pinks, mustard yellows, and warm timbers — that give each room its own character while maintaining cohesion. “We wanted the colours to feel vibrant yet serene,” Mardi explains. The result is a home that feels both lively and calming, with each room offering a unique experience but still part of a harmonious whole. The material choices throughout the home reinforce this delicate balance. In the kitchen, a striking quartzite island serves as the focal point, while the main bedroom and ensuite are designed as a peaceful retreat with soft blues, polished plaster, and natural stone finishes. “The materials were chosen for their beauty and practicality,” Mardi says. The concealed ensuite door, hidden behind a wall of timber veneer, adds a touch of surprise and refinement. Elonera House’s success lies in its ability to be both expressive and deeply functional. “Winning the Best Residential Interior at the Dulux Colour Awards was a wonderful recognition,” says Mardi. “But what I’m most proud of is how this home reflects the family’s spirit — expressive, joyful, and grounded in family life.” For Studio Doherty, Elonera House is more than just a design project. It’s a place where elegance, practicality, and personality come together to create a home that feels timeless, welcoming, and full of life. After dazzling Sydney’s dining scene with Lana — a modern Italian‑Asian gem inside Hinchcliff House — Alex Wong now takes the helm across all four of its levels as the first chef to curate a vision through the building’s entire culinary floorplan. Known for his playful riff on Italian staples and nods to Asian ingredients, Wong is bringing cohesion without compromise. You have recently been appointed Executive Chef of Hinchcliff House in Sydney — do you have a favourite dish on the menu across the venues? At Lana, I’m loving the roasted Bannockburn chicken with white pepper sauce and South Australian Goolwa pippies. I’ve always had a soft spot for dishes that mix surf and turf — alla mare e monti. What’s the first dish you ever fell in love with — and do you still cook it today? Potato gnocchi. We used to make a version with kipfler potatoes — serious hard work, but the payoff was the fluffiest, lightest gnocchi you’ll ever eat. We did a cacio e pepe version at Ajo Restaurant in the Welcome Hotel, Rozelle, and I’ve brought the same base recipe to Lana a few times since — sometimes with ragù, sometimes with a kombu e pepe sauce. What’s one piece of advice you’d give to home cooks looking to elevate their weeknight dinners? Keep it simple. Keep it delicious. And don’t be afraid to add a splash of fish sauce — it works wonders in braises, dressings, even on a fresh veg salad. 5 Minutes with AlexWong Executive Chef of Hinchcliff House in Sydney Firepop Ray and Alina have created something one-ofa-kind in Sydney. What started as a food truck now feels like a cult favourite. Alina’s wine list is spot-on, too. It’s always a faultless experience. Alex Wong’s Top 3 Recommendations: 3. What’s one underappreciated ingredient or flavour you think more people should be using at home? White pepper. It’s floral, aromatic and adds a totally different layer to a dish. Cooking Italian food for most of my career, I didn’t use it much — but it’s something I’ve been reaching for more lately. firepopaustralia 2. Yakitori Yurippi I’ll start with skewers and a cold beer at Yurippi, then finish with a steaming bowl of ramen downstairs. @osteriadirussoandrusso Osteria di Russo & Russo Chef Robin Oh has built something special here, blending Korean flavours with regional Italian cooking. It’s unique, heartfelt, and stays true to that old-school hospitality Marc and Pino are known for. @yakitori.yurippi @hinchcliffhouse hinchcliffhouse.com Hinchcliff House Osteria di Russo & Russo Yakitori Yurippi Firepop FOR THE FOODIES We used to make a version of gnocchi with kipfler potatoes — serious hard work, but the payoff was the fluffiest, lightest gnocchi you’ll ever eat.” 1.

Prepare crab by removing the head and lightly rinsing out the grit. (Reserve the “head cheese” the orange looking soft stuff. That goes back into the sauce at the end.) Also keep the shell aside for presentation. Removing the Dead means fingers (it is the grey looking bits) and discard. 2. Heat a pot of boiling water enough to cook 2 portions of pasta comfortably, seasoned with salt (must taste like sea water). 3. Cut crab into 4 pieces, using a chef’s knife ideally with a thicker blade. Set aside. 4 Heat a wide based pan/pot/casserole pan with EVOO. Add garlic & chilli and fry off on medium heat with a few leaves of the Thai basil, cook for a few minutes until fragrant. 5. Add cherry tomatoes and tom yum paste and cook down for a couple more minutes, until the juices come out. Turn the heat up to high, add clams and wine, steam until clams open. Pick out clams and set aside. 6. Add prawn stock, tomato passata, blue swimmer crab and crab head and bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium, stirring to coat crab in all the juices (crab will take around 4 - 5 minutes to cook). Remove crab and set aside. 7. Meanwhile, reduce sauce until almost coating consistency on low heat. 8. When sauce is almost ready, drop your pasta in the boiling salted water, and stir continuously with a large tongs (spaghetti may take 2 - 3 minutes, depending on how fresh or how thick it is). Cook to your desired taste, ideally pasta should be served “AL DENTE” slightly under with a bit of bite. 9. Once spaghetti is cooked to the correct consistency, remove by straining the spaghetti through a colander (try to reserve 200ml in case need to adjust sauce). Drop spaghetti into sauce and stir with tongs or a wooden spoon whilst adding the butter and crab head cheese. 10. Cook the spaghetti in the sauce until sauce is coating. If too dry, add a bit of reserved pasta water. Try to stir vigorously or toss the pasta vigorously (this process is called “mantecare”). 11. Add cooked crab, crab head, clams, lime zest and six more leaves of Thai basil back into the pan, stir well. Remove from heat, season with fish sauce, lime juice if needed and a touch of salt. Transfer pasta using tongs onto a large serving plate/platter, top with crab legs & clams, pour over sauce, then grate bottarga using a microplane all over. 12. Finish with crab head on top and some more leaves of Thai basil to garnish. 13. Serve with some crusty bread to “scarpetta” (mop up the sauce) and a glass of crisp dry white wine Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc, and Verdicchio. 10 HOME DESIGN The Colour Trends Set to Define 2026 The Dulux Colour Trend Forecast unveils a palette of calm and comfort for the year ahead.
Looking for more home design inspiration? For styling tips, interior design trends and roundups of the hottest new furniture on the market, visit sitchu.com.au/home-design 11 The Dulux Colour Forecast is serious business. The result of endless research, insight analysis and collaboration, it has been a trusted guide for homeowners, designers and architects since 1999. This year’s Dulux Colour Team, led by Colour and Design Manager Lauren Treloar and Colour and Communications Manager Andrea Lucena-Orr, have forecast three palettes of calming and connecting colours as a response to enduring uncertainty. The three palettes of the 2026 forecast are connected by colours and tones that connote wellness, stability and connection. Earth-based neutrals, rich caramel tones and various gentle shades of green litter the 2026 forecast alongside pastel pops of colour. And it’s not just about paint colours. The team note that switching up soft furnishings like cushions, bed linen, vessels, and tableware offers other ways to jump on board. “Each palette has been thoughtfully designed, allowing Consumers to mix and match shades with ease by staying within the confines of each palette. This flexibility empowers people to personalise their spaces in a way that truly reflects their style and lifestyle.” — Lauren Treloar Ethereal Treloar notes that the ethereal palette is the most “expressive” in the collection, with plenty of gentle greens, mauves and blush pinks. Designed to be accompanied by inviting materials like oak, bleached wood, and delicate fabrics with a botanical sway, it’s all about sparking a sense of serenity and joy. LuceanaOrr adds, “With romantic tones like Dulux Savin, Dulux Different Pink and Dulux Mask, alongside subtle pastels such as Dulux Tiamo, Dulux Blue Shell and Dulux Soft Fresco, this palette feels playful, uplifting, and quietly luxurious.” Elemental In a slight chance of pace, Elemental is a “tonal, grounded palette built around warm whites and neutrals such as Dulux Blended Cream and Dulux Hog Bristle® Quarter and enriched with golden brown hues, such as Dulux Caramel Sundae and Dulux Coffee Dust,” says Lucena-Orr. This palette is about slow living, clarity, and simplicity, championed by subtle layers of grey and charcoal in a nod to the pared-back influence of Brutalism. Designed to be paired with durable textures like linen, concrete, and polished marble, the effect is one of calm. “Dulux Elemental reflects a desire for thoughtful consumption and balanced living. It’s not about having less for the sake of it but making room for what truly matters,” adds Lucena-Orr. Evoke The most energetic of the three palettes, Evoke channels optimism, expression and warmth. With a splash of both vintage charm and modernism, the palette is warm rather than bright. Luceana-Orr adds, “Blush pinks like Dulux Baked Clay, burnt oranges like Dulux Magic Melon, and warm golden tones such as Dulux Germania are layered with deeper hues like Dulux Misty Grape, Dulux Wink and Dulux Red Jacks to create personality and depth.” She continues, “It features vintage-inspired materials, handcrafted elements, and curated clutter, making spaces feel alive and layered, adding to our collections over time.” SITCHU MAGAZINE Image Credits: Dulux Colour Forecast 2026 Designer: Bree Banfield Digital Imagery: Clinkr Studio
