HOME TOUR 02 Modern Muse A clever reimagining of a compact Paddington terrace, where every corner is considered, playful pink tones set the mood, and art adds character at every turn.
SITCHU MAGAZINE The pastel pink door of this Paddington townhouse hints at the creative potential within. But for the family of four who call this terrace home, the brief to Claudia Lambert Interiors extended beyond their favourite hue. The project’s aim, which took a year to complete, was to make the most of the small footprint of the home, utilising every nook and cranny, maximising storage, and injecting personality through art. Head of Studio, Claudia, notes that space was one of the most challenging parts of the build. She shares, “We stole space from previously unused outdoor plumbing areas, created narrower joinery on one wall to create an illusion of generosity of passage, then graduated down into a sunken lounge to create a higher ceiling, therefore the illusion of a grander room.” A hero feature of the home is the custommade, floor-to-ceiling steel arch doors, which open fully to invite the outdoors in, seamlessly connecting the sun-drenched courtyard with the interior. Upstairs, the space-saving continues. With no major changes to the footprint, rooms were instead optimised with custom joinery and attic storage to ensure every inch was functional yet elegant. Exploring the complexity of pink, Claudia layered sophisticated tones with a selection of unique textures, including the scenestealing quartzite in the kitchen. This exquisite piece was the “hero and the real palette setter”, Claudia muses. “I used tones woven from the stone into the other elements like the subtle warm joinery and the earth-toned stools”. This then made way for the palette to evolve into caramels and browns. “The use of stone and mixed metals was a direction I steered them in to create a bit of playfulness and tension in the design.” The showstopping kitchen lies at the heart of the home, with the bench and seating. “The stools are from a NSW-based creator Odditi, and I chose them to complement the overly pink stone of the island, alongside a custom brass faceted leg for the island that gives it a unique voice”, shares Caludia. But it’s not just the big statement pieces that have her heart. She notes, the “moment in the kitchen where the large circular light sits above the shelf, it’s such a fun modern moment that ticks all my visual boxes!” Proof that lighting is a designer’s best friend. On the unique selection of lighting woven through the home, Claudia shares, “The objective was to have a mix of decorative lighting with functional lighting in the hope that the functional lighting is never used! We have everything on dimmers, so we could create a warm ambient feeling in every space. We used beautiful spot lights in bronze from Dunlin in the kitchen instead of a traditional pendant so as not to obstruct the view straight down to the lounge area and not overwhelm the space.” Bridging the design juxtaposition of old and new fell to the artwork. Claudia notes that “it helped to inform furniture choices and what feeling each space evoked.” A natural starting point for Claudia, she shares that she always, always starts with art when designing a space. “It helps me understand my clients and what they are drawn to. Some of the curation is intuitive and based on falling in love with the work, and other placements are based on a considered design intent. There was a definite mix of this in the home.” And it wasn’t just the parents getting in on the process. Claudia notes, “ I love it when the kids value design too. The kids picked their own art from my curation, and we made sure to maximise their storage, ability to work from their rooms, and have their personalities shine through. There were no quick decisions here. I always encourage people to spend money on items that will grow with the kids and can easily adapt to their age. Soft furnishings can be easily updated as their tastes change, and buying art that is not ‘kids art’ solves the problem of getting tired of the same old prints you see time and time again.” With hidden details around every corner, Claudia promises a final edit is crucial. “Once the foundations were laid, we were able to go in and curate the collection we had sourced. Some pieces meant for a certain space ended up living elsewhere, which was a really fun way to curate and have the clients have ownership of these elements.” Explore More Stylish Homes Peek inside exquisite properties and boutique accommodation across Australia and hear what inspired the architects, interior designers and homeowners. sitchu.com.au/home-tours “There were no quick decisions here. PROPERTY FEATURE 010 CountryCalm The Block’s Hannah and Candice took cues from Daylesford’s natural beauty, crafting a home where earthy calm meets bold, restorative style.
SITCHU MAGAZINE For The Block contestants Hannah and Candice, the location of this season’s show provided all the palette inspiration they needed. “The natural beauty of Daylesford was our guiding inspiration for the colour palette of the home. From the rolling hills and mineral springs to the autumn foliage and rich red earth, the landscape’s warmth and grounding energy shaped our palette,” they explain. Bringing nature indoors with an earthy foundation was key to their vision of a space that balanced “spalike calm with bold, statement-making design.” Naturally, lighting and texture were key to the vision, chosen to enhance the home’s sensory appeal. Lighting was designed to highlight architectural details and create ambience, with recessed lighting in the arches and soft, sheer curtains filtering daylight. “Velvet, Venetian plaster, marble, and statement tiles were crucial,” the couple note. “Each surface was chosen to add depth, tactility, and contrast, so the home feels layered and rich from every angle.” A favourite feature that encapsulates their vision of an indulgent yet artistic haven is the custom resin Amber bathtub. “It’s sculptural, warm, and a real conversation starter,” says Hannah. “It captures everything we wanted the home to be — unique, indulgent, and unforgettable.” Another design highlight is the eight-seater dining table by timber craftsman Christian Cole, made from rich Marri timber with striking live edges. “It appears to float atop two sculptural spherical bases,” Candice shares. “The living space was designed for flow and openness, allowing the table to feel both natural and commanding — a statement piece that anchors the heart of the home.” As the central hub of the home, the dining and kitchen areas are clear favourites for the pair. Designed with “gathering, connection, and memory-making” in mind, they feature a floor-to-ceiling Vine and Vault wine cabinet, a marble-clad Concepta bar, and a floating fireplace finished in Pietra Spaccata Venetian plaster — elements that come together to create “a showstopping yet welcoming centrepiece that will bring people together for years to come.” With such an incredible vision and immaculate execution, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is the duo’s full-time profession. While not the case, both drew on their day jobs to help bring the project to life. “Hannah’s geology background gave us a unique edge,” says Candice. “She’s used to analysing structures, working with precision, and problemsolving under pressure — skills that translated really well on site when dealing with materials, measurements, and the unexpected challenges that come up in a build.” Candice’s background in marketing also proved invaluable. “I was always thinking about the bigger picture — how the house would appeal to future buyers, how our design decisions could tell a story, and how we could create something with real personality and impact,” she explains. “Together, those skills balanced the practical with the creative. We weren’t just building a house; we were creating a home with both integrity and flair.” Of course, the nature of The Block’s unique pressures also shaped their process and design choices. “On The Block, you don’t have the luxury of second-guessing,” they share. “The time pressure forced us to be decisive and trust our instincts, focusing on high-impact elements like statement lighting, feature tiles, and bold textures that could transform a space quickly without sacrificing quality.” Despite the occasional moments of stress, the couple credit the experience with strengthening both their relationship and their creative confidence. “We learned how to really trust each other’s strengths, communicate under pressure, and back each other through anything life could throw at us,” says Hannah. The result? “We created a home that truly reflects us — bold, artistic, and deeply considered, yet also warm and liveable. Seeing it come together under such pressure is something we’ll always be proud of.” Interior Designer: @hanandcan @theblock Photographer: Diakrit Words: Olivia Storrie “We created a home that truly reflects us — it’s bold, artistic, and deeply considered, yet also warm and liveable.
