HOME TOUR 02 Euro Vision Award-winning interior designer Jase Sullivan turns a Byron Bay holiday home into a Mediterranean-inspired retreat, where bright colour and eclectic charm reign supreme.

SITCHU MAGAZINE Byron Bay is one of the country’s most chilledout and serene destinations. So, when a newly married couple from Melbourne purchased a stunning five-bedroom holiday home on Clarkes Beach, they turned to renowned interior designer, Jase Sullivan, to help stamp the property with Byron’s signature blissedout vibe and a touch of Mediterranean flair. Jase’s design journey began with a goal to reimagine the space as a modern homage to vintage holiday retreats, drawing inspiration from his extensive travels across Greece, France, and Italy. As he scoped out the property for the first time, he envisioned a radical overhaul, proposing a complete reconfiguration of the floor plan to evoke the carefree spirit of Mediterranean escapades. “I flipped it all around,” Jase explains, “creating a fresh layout that breathed new life into the home.” Central to the designer’s ethos was the seamless integration of his client’s preferences with his creative vision, resulting in a captivating blend of personalisation and uniqueness throughout the home. Jase was given carte blanche with colour, so he didn’t hold back in brightening the home with a kaleidoscope of vibrant hues reminiscent of sun-kissed coastal towns. “I wanted the home to feel like a ’70s Mediterranean vacation home. The beachside location inspired me to design a place that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Even though it is quite detailed, it also feels welcoming and playful,” Jase shares of his overarching brief. Indeed, the residence exudes an air of relaxed sophistication, a tribute to Jase’s most cherished holidays. Texture and finishes played a pivotal role in the overhaul, with Tadelakt (a typical Moroccan finishing) walls and stone channelling the light ambiance of Mediterranean villas, juxtaposed against bright upholstered mid-century furniture and stained timber surfaces. “The house is so fun and bright,” Jase exclaims, reflecting on his exuberant palette choices that infuse the space with energy and vitality. Structurally, Jase’s design prowess shines through in the meticulous reimagining of the home’s layout, flipping spaces and introducing architectural flourishes that amplify the beachside location’s carefree charm. With its four-sided archway and verdant vistas, the central courtyard emerges as the architectural hero, flooding the interiors with natural light and fostering a seamless indooroutdoor flow, perfect for entertaining. “The deck off the kitchen, dining, and living room overlooks the garden and pool, and there’s also an integrated outdoor vegan teppanyaki kitchen,” Jase says. Outdoor spaces are imbued with an air of European elegance, with custom powder-coated furniture and pink pool umbrellas sourced from Italy tapping into the feel of a coastal resort. As Jase reflects on the project, he’s proud of the result, creating a home that radiates warmth, character, and joy. “I am most proud of this project for transforming the entire house into a completely different look, flipping it on its head, and changing the layout to a much more liveable space,” he shares. In a world where homes often echo trends and templates, Jase’s design narrative stands as a testament to the power of creativity, collaboration, and a boundless spirit of adventure. “Relaxed yet polished, this home is a triumphant love letter to all of my favourite holiday destinations,” he concludes. AREA GUIDE Neighbourhood Calm clear waters, generous foreshore parklands and an enviable café scene are what make Sandgate one of Brisbane’s most soughtafter bayside suburbs. A coastal gem renowned for its relaxed atmosphere and rich heritage, historic buildings, stunning waterfront views along Moreton Bay and a wealth of scenic parks dot the landscape. Sandgate’s serene foreshore defines this bayside town, with meandering walking paths, picturesque picnic spots, water sports and fresh fish and chips sourced from nearby local seafood trawlers. The community is a mixed bag of established families with children, empty nesters and older residents with one thing in common – the love of relaxed waterside living within a tight-knit community. Young couples and growing families seek out the area for their forever homes by the bay - without an exorbitant price tag attached. Things to Do Sandgate’s foreshore is a constant bustle of activity, with its parklands and generous public facilities creating a perfect setting for an active neighbourhood. Locals of all shapes and sizes take to The Lovers’ Walk – a walking track that meanders along the esplanade from Shorncliffe to Sandgate, leading to the northern point of neighbouring Brighton. You’ll find locals enjoying a range of water sports, with kite surfing, stand-up paddle boarding and wind surfing forming part of the regular fitness regime for many. Boat enthusiasts make the most of the ideal fishing conditions while families and friends come together to tuck into the freshest seafood at their favourite waterside picnic spots. When they’re not swimming, crabbing, sailing or riding their bikes along the esplanade, families gather at Arthur Davis Park for its green open parklands, playground and barbecue facilities. Lifestyle Sandgate is beyond blessed with a vibrant community spirit. Local markets, live music venues, inclusive events, and a variety of delicious dining options are met with friendly faces, fantastic amenities and picturesque streets. The community atmosphere is at its peak beside Einbunpin Lagoon Park. From here everything appears within easy walking distance, with grocery stores, fashion boutiques, designer homewares and local eateries that look out over the nearby lagoon and leafy parklands. The abundance of open spaces and array of great education options make Sandgate the perfect fit for any new family moving in. From its historic seaside village atmosphere to its beautiful Queenslander homes, Sandgate has a year-round holiday feel that’s seemingly worlds away from the hustle and bustle of city living. Do you have any tips for cooking seasonally? Get familiar with what’s in season and experiment with those ingredients in your recipes. Try to visit local farmers’ markets where you can find the freshest seasonal produce. Seasonal cooking doesn’t just mean fruits and vegetables; it applies to proteins and grains too. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature’s rhythm to nourish your body. Do you have any advice for cooking nourishing food whilst holding down a hectic job? My number one strategy I swear by is Sunday meal prep. Dedicate a few hours on the weekend to prepare meals for the week ahead — this not only saves time but also ensures you have healthy options readily available. Another lifesaver and absolute go-to of mine are one-pan recipes. They’re quick, easy and leave less washing up. What can people do to get the most out of their supplements when it comes to food, cooking and eating? While supplements are a wonderful way to support your nutrition, it’s key to remember they work best alongside a balanced diet. 5 Minutes with Jessica Sepel Founder of JSHealth Vitamins shares her wellbeing philosophy and tips for cooking nourishing foods with a busy lifestyle. Seasonal cooking doesn’t just mean fruits and vegetables; it applies to proteins and grains too. It’s a wonderful way to connect with nature’s rhythm to nourish your body. Omega-3s As the weather cools down, the skin can also become drier, so loading up on healthy fats such as salmon, mackerel, eggs, walnuts, chia seeds and flaxseeds for omega-3s are a good way to care for your complexion from the inside out. Root Vegetables Root vegetables such as squash and sweet potato as they’re perfect for roasting or adding to soups. Seasonal Fruits Fruits like apples and pears are seasonal favourites and offer a natural sweetness that goes wonderfully with warming spices like cinnamon. I also love pecans, legumes and oats for added texture and nutrition. Going into autumn, what are your favourite seasonal ingredients and why? @jshealth 1. 3. To get the most out of your supplement formulas, pair them with nutrient-rich foods that aid absorption. For example, taking fatsoluble vitamins like A, D, E and K with healthy fats can improve their effectiveness. Also, cooking methods are so important. Overcooking can deplete nutrients from your food, so opt for steaming or grilling where possible. Make sure you’re eating a variety of foods rich in different vitamins and minerals. Line a baking tray with baking paper. Place the pumpkin and red onion wedges on the baking tray, leaving room in the centre for the chicken. Drizzle with 1 tbsp olive oil and season to taste with sea salt and pepper. Place the tray in the oven to bake for 20 minutes. In a large shallow bowl, combine the almond meal, dukkah and thyme. In a separate shallow bowl, whisk the egg and milk of choice. Season with salt and pepper, to taste. Using one hand, dip the chicken into the egg mixture until it’s evenly covered. Then, using your other hand, evenly coat the chicken in the crumbed mix. Repeat until you’ve crumbed all the chicken pieces. Place the chicken strips in the middle of the lined tray and lightly spray with olive oil. Add the broccoli florets to the tray and drizzle with the remaining olive oil. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes or until the chicken is golden and cooked through. To test a piece, slice it right down the middle. When cooked, it will be white all the way through. If the chicken is still pink inside, return it to the oven until cooked through. Serve with hummus or tahini dip and lemon wedges. 09 SITCHU MAGAZINE

10 HOME DESIGN Table Styling Tips: How to Elevate Your Next Dining Experience At the heart of any dining table is the centrepiece arrangement. Candlesticks add warmth and ambiance and also help you play around with height and dimension.

Looking for more home design inspiration? For styling tips, interior design trends and roundups of the hottest new furniture on the market, visit sitchu.com.au/home-design Lay the Perfect Foundation When it comes to styling your table, the most crucial decision you make is what tablecloth to use. It’s worth investing in a good quality linen tablecloth to always have on hand for entertaining. You can’t go past something from I Love Linen’s gorgeous range — the French Flax Linen Table Cloth in Marine Blue Stripe ($135) and the French Flax Linen Table Cloth in Ivy Stripe ($135) are classically elegant choices that would work in both a casual setting or a fancier soiree. Tableware Touches Mixing and matching colours and patterns makes tableware a canvas for personal expression, elevating the dining table into a reflection of individual style and creativity. In The Roundhouse’s Green Bon Appétit Plate ($29 per plate, pre-order) is unassuming yet bold. Add a pop of sophisticated colour and dimension with Straw Wave Placemats from In The Roundhouse ($50 for four), which come in light blue, green, pink, and yellow. Complete the table setting with a White & Beige Cutlery Set ($129 for 16 pieces), with white handles and a soft beige dip on end; they are beyond versatile and will go with any colour scheme. Front and Centre At the heart of any dining table is the centrepiece arrangement. Candlesticks add warmth and ambiance and also help you play around with height and dimension. The Percy Candle Holders from McMullin & co. ($159 for a pair) have a unique wavy shape that makes them the perfect accessory to style your tabletop. Add a classic white bowl, like this Nigel Fruit Bowl from McMullin & co. ($139), in the middle of the table, and style it with fresh fruit for a super easy yet impactful touch. Grand Finale Whether it’s a beautifully styled platter (when it comes to immaculate and romantic grazing tables, no one does it quite like Stories To Gather) or a bunch of fresh flowers, a dazzling vase like the quirky Pomponette vase from Maison Balzac ($159) will make any posy look a million dollars. These final elements are key to elevating your dining experience. Final Check Once you’ve styled the entire table, assess it from the point of view of where you’ll be sitting and from further back to see how all the elements (the plates, candlesticks, flowers, shapes and arrangements etc) come together and make any tweaks if needed. If you’re keen to level up your table-setting skills, we’ve got you covered. From selecting the perfect foundation to adding those impactful final touches, each step is crucial in creating an atmosphere that welcomes and impresses your guests. 11 SITCHU MAGAZINE
