02 HOME TOUR Fusing contemporary living with a heritage heart, this Victorian restoration is proof you can have it all. WORDS: Olivia Storrie PHOTOGRAPHY: Dave Kulesza STYLING: Fenton & Fenton Colour Coded

SITCHU MAGAZINE Often, the most successful preservation projects strike a perfect balance between old and new, seamlessly blending historic charm with contemporary elements. The result is a home that simultaneously honours its past while ensuring it endures into the future. For ownerbuilder couple Aaron and Amber, the vision for their heritage fixer-upper extended beyond restoring the timeless Victorian facade to its former glory. Equally important was creating a warm and welcoming home that could adapt to the needs of their growing family. But it wasn’t all smooth sailing. “The house was in such a state when we first walked through. Sadly, it had not been maintained for many years and was totally unliveable. I have no doubt it would have scared most people off, but we instantly saw the potential,” shares Amber. While the pair acknowledged the sheer size of the project, they couldn’t pass up the opportunity to settle their family in the community-centric suburb of Brighton East. Immersing themselves in the research phase of their journey, Amber and Aaron were thrilled to encounter many other young families and lovely neighbours on early walks through the neighbourhood and sunny afternoons spent at local parks. The home’s timeless Victorian features and potential to extend sealed the deal. Highlighting contrast and connection was central to the overarching vision, with a deep desire to preserve the heritage at the front, while crafting a modern, spacious and liveable extension out the back. Beyond restoring the facade, Amber and Aaron worked tirelessly to preserve other historic elements dotted throughout the home. “The house has amazing high ceilings and detailed cornices, which we painstakingly restored along with the fireplaces in each bedroom,” explains Amber. For the rest of the home, Amber shares that “space, light, storage and practicality were non-negotiables”. “If you love a certain colour or combo, find a way to introduce it into your home, whether that be with tiles, paint or soft furnishings. I guarantee it will make you happy and people will love seeing your personality reflected in your home.” — Amber 03

04 HOME TOUR Leaning into a ‘perfectly imperfect’ aesthetic, the couple focused heavily on the kitchen as the heart of the home. Their choice of materials was key in the process. Durability was the aim of the game, from the wide oak floorboards to the microcement benchtops, which Amber notes, “set the tone for the whole space.” As for the palette, there was no shying away from colour. “We wanted to have some fun and add pops of colour in unexpected ways from our kitchen island and bench tops to our bathrooms and tiled fireplace. The tones we have chosen offer so many fun pairings like the contrasting maroon, lilacs and blues which we feel give interest and depth,” explains Amber. Once the architectural foundations were in place, the couple turned to Fenton & Fenton for the interior styling to help bring the finishing touches together. Layering artful accents, collected objects and personalitydriven pieces throughout the home, the styling enhances the home’s sense of warmth and individuality while complementing its bold use of colour. Offering advice to anyone afraid to embrace colour in their interiors, Amber continues: “Don’t worry too much about trends. If you love a certain colour or combo, find a way to introduce it into your home whether that be with tiles, paint or soft furnishings. I guarantee it will make you happy, and people will love seeing your personality reflected in your home.” The arch motif was another non-negotiable for the couple who note they have always been drawn to soft curves over harsh lines. “The original arch in the hallway inspired us to go with the four large arched French doors that open out to our backyard. It was the very first design feature we settled on.” While working together was a breeze, the timeline the couple had set for themselves presented the biggest challenge. “We set ourselves the goal of moving in before Christmas with our baby due early December. We poured the slab in October and finished the kitchen on Christmas Eve; it was a huge push,” shares Aaron. But with the family settled before the year was out, it was all worth it. “Aaron worked tirelessly on our build, and seeing firsthand everything he managed and coordinated made me incredibly proud,” adds Amber. Offering a final word of advice on renovating a period home, Amber says: “Make sure you understand heritage overlays before starting. Lock in your fixtures and finishes early and keep communication clear. Most importantly, build for you, not for anyone else.” BUILDER / OWNER: Elwood Building Co STYLING / FURNITURE: Fenton & Fenton PHOTOGRAPHY: Dave Kulesza WORDS: Olivia Storrie

Every home has them: the empty corner that never quite works, the space beneath the stairs, or the oddly shaped nook that’s always searching for a purpose. While these areas are often overlooked, they present an opportunity to add both functionality and personality to your home. With thoughtful planning and a creative approach, even the most challenging spaces can become some of the hardest-working areas of the house. SITCHU MAGAZINE Looking for more tips for your property, or thinking about buying or selling your home? Visit belleproperty.com/buy Look for the Potential Awkward spaces are often defined by their unusual proportions, limited natural light or unconventional layouts. Rather than seeing these characteristics as limitations, consider how they might inspire a completely different use. A narrow alcove could become a dedicated workspace, an unused landing could transform into a reading corner, or a tucked-away nook could provide valuable storage. The key is identifying what the space can do rather than focusing on what it can’t. Rethink the Space Beneath the Stairs The area beneath a staircase is one of the most underutilised spaces in many homes. Custom joinery can transform it into practical storage, while open shelving offers an opportunity to display books, artwork and treasured objects. For homes where storage isn’t the priority, consider creating a quiet retreat complete with an armchair, side table and soft lighting. A thoughtfully styled nook can add warmth and personality while making every square metre count. Turn Empty Corners into Design Features Corners are often left vacant simply because standard furniture doesn’t fit comfortably within them. Instead of ignoring these areas, use them to create visual interest. A statement armchair paired with a floor lamp can establish a quiet reading spot, while a compact desk can provide a practical work-fromhome solution. Decorative shelving, indoor plants or a sculptural side table can also help elevate an overlooked corner into an area that adds warmth and visual interest. Thoughtful Furniture Choices When furnishing smaller or unusually shaped spaces, scale is everything. Select pieces that suit the proportions of the room and prioritise furniture that serves multiple functions. Storage ottomans, nesting tables, built-in seating and fold-away desks can provide flexibility without overwhelming the space. Reimagine Your Attic or Loft Often used to store seasonal items and forgotten belongings, attics can offer far more than extra storage. With the right vision, they can be transformed into guest accommodation, a home office, creative studio or children’s playroom, adding valuable living space without increasing your home’s footprint. Careful consideration should be given to lighting, insulation and ventilation, but with a clever design approach, an attic can become one of the most charming rooms in the home. Use Light to Your Advantage Good lighting can completely change how a space feels. Awkward areas often suffer from a lack of natural light, making them appear smaller than they are. Layered lighting, including wall sconces, table lamps and floor lamps, can create warmth and depth. Mirrors are equally effective, reflecting both natural and artificial light while helping a room feel larger and more open. Keep Clutter Under Control The success of any small space lies in organisation. Even the most beautifully designed nook can quickly lose its appeal if it becomes overcrowded. Incorporate storage wherever possible and be selective about what you display. Baskets, concealed cabinetry and built-in shelving can help maintain a clean, curated look while ensuring the space remains practical. Embrace the Possibilities Awkward spaces don’t have to remain underutilised corners of your home. With thoughtful planning and a little creativity, they can become functional, beautiful areas that enhance both the way you live and the overall character of your home. Sometimes, the spaces that seem the most challenging are the ones with the greatest potential. How to Make the Most of Awkward Spaces in Your Home

08 Chef’s Tip Let the filling cool slightly before wrapping to keep the pastry crisp and prevent the spring roll wrappers from tearing. Image Credit: Chloe Skipp ADVERTORIAL

SITCHU MAGAZINE Crispy Martabak with Extra Hot Sambal Dip Golden Indonesian stuffed pancake with a fiery ABC Extra Hot Chilli dipping sauce Prep 15 mins | Cook 20 mins | Serves 2-4 Ingredients Method Martabak 500g beef mince 2 tbsp olive oil 1 bunch spring onions, thinly sliced 3 cloves garlic, minced 3 tsp curry powder 1 tsp white pepper 2 tsp salt 4 eggs, lightly whisked 1 packet spring roll wrappers 1 cup oil, for frying Sambal Dip 2 tbsp coconut oil 1 clove garlic, finely minced ¼ cup ABC Extra Hot Chilli Sauce 2 tbsp soy sauce 2 tsp palm or brown sugar ¼ cup water 2 tbsp lime juice To make the filling, heat a large pan with olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the white parts of the spring onions and cook for 1 to 2 minutes, until softened and fragrant. Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute. Increase the heat to high, then add the beef mince, curry powder, white pepper and salt. Cook, breaking up the mince as you go, until well browned and cooked through. Remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly, then mix through the eggs and remaining spring onions. To make the sambal dip, heat the coconut oil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Add the garlic and cook for 1 minute, until fragrant. Stir in the ABC Extra Hot Chilli Sauce, soy sauce, sugar, water and lime juice. Simmer until thickened and glossy, then set aside. To assemble the martabak, lay a spring roll wrapper flat on a chopping board and lightly brush the edges with water. Place 1 to 2 tablespoons of filling in the centre, then fold into a tight envelope, sealing well on all sides. Heat the oil in a pan over medium-high heat to 160°C. Fry the martabak for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until golden, crisp and cooked through. To serve, slice into pieces and serve hot with the sambal dipping sauce on the side. Martabak belongs in the centre of the table. Crisp pastry, egg-rich filling, spiced beef, spring onion and a glossy ABC Extra Hot Chilli sambal dip, all cut into golden pieces for hands to reach across the platter. It is generous, tactile food, shaped by movement and history, then made for the easy pleasure of sharing. Savour the flavour at home with ABC Sauces. ABC Extra Hot Chilli Sauce, or Sambal Extra Pedas, brings the sweet heat and sharp chilli brightness that cuts through the rich filling and crisp pastry, adding a little Indonesian-inspired fire to weeknight dinners, date-night plates and anything made for sharing.
